Loose or cracked manifold fitting
PVC adapters, threaded fittings, and manifold connections can crack from pressure, age, freezing, or movement in the soil.

A leaking sprinkler valve box can come from the valve, solenoid, manifold, pipe connection, or water entering the box from surrounding soil.
A sprinkler valve box is leaking most often because a valve fitting is loose, a manifold connection is cracked, the valve diaphragm is damaged, or the valve is not closing fully. If the leak continues when the controller is off, the problem is usually on the pressurized side of the irrigation system.
PVC adapters, threaded fittings, and manifold connections can crack from pressure, age, freezing, or movement in the soil.
A stuck diaphragm or debris inside the valve can let water pass through even when the controller says the zone is off.
A loose solenoid, damaged O-ring, or manual bleed screw can leak directly from the top of the valve.
Freeze damage can split valve bodies and fittings, especially if the system was not blown out properly before winter.
The most important clue is timing. If the valve box leaks only while one zone is running, the problem may be downstream of that valve. If it leaks all the time, the main line, manifold, or valve body is more likely.
Do not bury the box or ignore the leak. Water around valves can corrode wire connections, damage solenoids, soften soil, and create bigger repair work later.
Sometimes, but overtightening can crack plastic fittings. The correct repair depends on where the water is coming from.
That often means the downstream pipe, valve outlet, or zone piping has a leak after the valve opens.
Yes, if it is loose, damaged, missing an O-ring, or cross-threaded.
It does not need to be perfectly dry, but it should not stay full of water in dry weather.
