What is a sprinkler blowout adapter?
A sprinkler blowout adapter is a device used in the winterizing of irrigation systems which is meant to connect an air compressor to the system’s mainline, valve manifold, or backflow preventer. Its main function is to eliminate the water from the pipes by using compressed air running through it and thus to avoid any winter cold weather damages. These adapters are found in different ways such as being threaded, quick-connect, and barbed, so they are fit to different irrigation setups. It is usually made of strong materials like brass or steel so they can withstand the high pressure coming from the air compressor. The blowout process implies sticking the device to the irrigation system, attaching the air compressor, and adjusting the compressor to a safe pressure (usually 40-80 PSI). Next, the compressor is used to blow out each irrigation zone one by one, thereby expelling all the water. This method guarantees the system’s full functionality even in icy weather.

How To Use Sprinkler Blowout Adapter
Using a sprinkler blowout adapter to winterize your irrigation system involves a few key steps. Here’s a guide:
- Stop the Water Supply: Check that the water supply to the irrigation system is completely shut off. To do this, it is very important to stop water from entering the system during the blowout process.
- Snap In the Blowout Adapter: Fasten the blowout adapter into the system. With it being at the mainline, backflow preventer, or valve manifold, install the adapter. The adapter’s edge must tighten to the irrigation system’s connection point.
- Connect the Air Compressor: Plug in the air compressor hose to the blowout adapter. Do not allow the connection to loosen, to avoid air leaks in the process.
- Adjust the Compressor Pressure: Set up the air compressor to the calculated pressure level for your system, usually within 40 to 80 PSI. It will burst the pipes or the sprinkler heads of the system if you use a to high a pressure.
- Blowing the System Out: Turn the air compressor on and blow one zone at a time at the initial stage, the valve is turned on and the compressed air force water out the sprinkler heads. Run this process until you hear only air that comes out. Turn off the air compressor when it’s finished.
- Check All Zones: Stand by each zone on your irrigation system and then repeat the process to be sure that all the water has been expelled from every section.
- Remove the Equipment: When all the areas are found debris free, shut off the compressor, detach it from the adapter, and get rid of the blowout adapter from the irrigation system.
- Check the System: See if any of the water is left in the system. If needed, then again blow out the system process.
To ensure your irrigation system being well protected against the low temperatures over winter, you can do this easily by the use of a blowout adapter, and that will help preventing any damage as a result of the freezing temperatures.
