Closing Sprinklers Too Early: Plan the Remaining Watering

Closing sprinklers too early can leave you without the watering your lawn or new plants still need. Before choosing the date, discuss that care with the installer and agree on a practical plan.

Closing sprinklers too early: check plant needs

List new sod, recent planting and any area receiving special care. Ask the installer or landscape professional what watering is still needed for those plants and conditions. A standard closing date cannot answer that question. Bring the resulting care plan into the conversation with your irrigation contractor.

Make any alternative watering workable

If hand watering is advised, decide who will do it and which equipment they will use. Keep it separate from the closed irrigation system. Also agree who will put that equipment away when the plants no longer need it. A plan is useful only if someone can carry it out.

Avoid a casual restart after closing

Tell household members and gardeners when the system has been closed. If watering needs change, speak with the irrigation provider before turning the supply back on. Using the system again may change its winter status. The earlier completion note should then be reviewed with the new information.
